I guess you may have heard that before? I know I have. Maybe you have just thought it.
Our culture places a lot of emphasis on leaders. We have lots of resources available on leadership and there is a lot of discussion on good leadership and bad leadership.
As we are all experts, we can be prone to pointing out bad leadership and becoming critical of it. I know this from my own experience!
The point I want to raise however, is for those who consider themselves leaders as well as for those who don’t.
Thomas J. Watson Sr said “Nothing so conclusively proves a man’s ability to lead others as what he does from day to day to lead himself.”
While there are a few points that can be drawn from that, I would like to look at it this way: You need to lead yourself!
Whether or not you consider yourself a leader, you need to lead yourself.
Well you might say that a statement like that doesn’t apply to you, because you are following someone else. A boss at work, a pastor at church, a group of some kind, a parent or spouse at home or even a guru, either secular or religious.
Sure, but tell me this… Who made the choice to follow them? Who decided to place YOU under the influence of someone or something else?
You are the only one that can truly lead yourself! The decisions ultimately rest with you, even the difficult ones.
I want to encourage you to make the right decisions. Sometimes these are hard, especially in the short term, but no one else can make them for you.
Sure, others can help, but they won’t always be there for you. Unless you have your own conviction, you will just be getting pushed this way and that.
If you really want to, you can jump on Google and find a conclusive argument in favour of just about any point of view you like! Sure, research is good, but sooner or later you will need to make decisions and stand on them yourself.
If you don’t make the decisions, they will be made for you, and by people who don’t have your best interests at heart.
Make the decisions you know you need to make!
You can do it!
Bless you guys!
